For over two decades, artist Ray “Bubba” Sorensen has traveled Iowa painting The Freedom Rock®—massive boulders transformed into heartfelt tributes to America’s veterans. These works have become beloved landmarks, drawing travelers from across the country and keeping the stories of service and sacrifice alive.
The Medal of Honor Murals project builds on that legacy, taking the mission to new heights—literally. Towering, double-sided murals along U.S. Highway 20 honor individual Medal of Honor recipients, sharing their acts of courage through vivid, hand-painted art. Each mural is both a work of art and a permanent memorial, ensuring these stories live on for generations.
Highway 20 isn’t just a road—it’s officially designated the Medal of Honor Highway across Iowa and much of the nation. Spanning over 300 miles from Sioux City to Dubuque, this route is a vital east–west connection for communities, travelers, and commerce.
By placing these monumental murals along Highway 20, we create a natural self-guided tour that invites visitors to explore Iowa’s towns, learn its history, and honor the nation’s bravest. It’s a project rooted in Iowa but designed to inspire across the country.
